Our Mission

Our mission is to create community through delicious food & beverages, art & music; to be a gathering place where everyone feels comfortable and has fun; and to build a better Boston by supporting the work of local non-profit organizations.

Our History

Bella Luna & The Milky Way is a dining and entertainment landmark founded in 1993 in Jamaica Plain, Boston by Kathie Mainzer, Charlie Rose, and Carol Downs. The restaurant’s mission is to create community through delicious food, fabulous art, and original entertainment; to be a gathering place where everyone feels comfortable and has fun; and to build a better Boston by supporting the work of local non-profit organizations.

How it all started: As residents of JP in 1993, we were concerned about crime and drug trafficking in the neighborhood. We saw a boarded up space on Centre Street and thought that if we could create a family friendly restaurant, it would make the neighborhood safer and more welcoming.

Since we worked for non-profit organizations, we lots of ideas but very little cash.   Our friend Clara Wainwright suggested, “If you want to open a small business, ask your friends and family members to invest a thousand dollars each,” a Kickstarter campaign before there was kickstarter.   So with a three page business plan and a lot of chutzpah, we raised $50,000 and were on our way!

From the day we opened, Bella Luna has been embraced by Jamaica Plain and the people of Boston.   Through our humble beginnings as a 19-seat pizza, salad and sandwich shop into a full-service restaurant with 175 seats, 45 employees, entertainment space, outdoor patio and full liquor license, we have been supported and enriched by community input.

We believe in the democracy of food:  that delicious, gourmet cuisine can be offered at affordable prices.  We are a family-run business with a collaborative, friendly work culture.   The heart of our mission as a small business is to build a better Boston by supporting the work of neighborhood groups and non-profit organizations.   Bella Luna donates 1% of its sales to local non-profit organizations every year and has increased resources for community groups by hosting fundraisers and events.
